What were two prominent things that happened to Max (as he describes at the end of Chapter 1) during the summer before eighth grade?

During the summer before eighth grade, Max details two things that happen to him. First, Max states that he begins to grow...a lot. Max grows so fast that Grim states that he should go barefoot because "he is exploding out of his shoes".
