What was "milk sickness"?

"Milk sickness" was an illness with symptoms of fever, stomach ache, loss of appetite, constipation, coma, and potentially death. It was caused by drinking the milk of a cow that had eaten the white snakeroot plant. Dr. Brabson, who practiced medicine after the Civil War and who was the grandfather of one of the Foxfire staff members, developed a cure for this disease.
