In the play, The Pupil, the Pupil is the antagonist.... the character who triggers change and transformation in the protagonist, the Professor. On a metaphoric level, the Pupil is an embodiment of everything that is free, curious, and exploratory about human existence - the spirit of impulse, which is often destroyed by a spirit of control and/or rigidity.
