What is the theme in Foundation and Empire by Isaac Asimov?

One major theme in the novel, Foundation and Empire, is acceptance..... the idea that everyone has a need to be accepted. This theme is illustrated through the Mule's relationship with Bayta. Her kindness and willingness to listen, endear her to the otherwise cruel and manipulative Mule, leading him to take her off his list of targets.
