What is the author's style in Foundation and Empire by Isaac Asimov?

The book is written in third person from the point of view of several of the characters. This point of view is adequate for this story though it's also vital to have additional information and that is provided through various means. For example, there are "references" that are taken from an encyclopedia of the day. Those references provide vital information that explains situations, events and people.
