Like Prelude to Foundation, Forward the Foundation is set in the final years of the Galactic Era, beginning during the rocky reign of the Emperor Cleon I and continuing through the years of rapid decline under a military junta and two weak emperors. Mathematician Hari Seldon, who in Prelude to Foundation comes as a young man to the planet Trantor, the Galactic center, to deliver a theoretical paper about "psychohistory" before the Decennial Mathematics Convention, has matured into a respected scientist with important contacts in the Imperial Court. Emperor Cleon I continues to reign ten years later and still wants Hari to turn this theory into a practical tool to shore up his reign.
