How does the theme of aging play a role in Part 1?

Hari and Cleon are the same age, and Hari from Chapter 2 onwards obsesses about aging. The theme that grows steadily more prominent and gloomy as the novel progresses. Hari at several points observes the ravages of time on Cleon in Part 1.
