The story takes place in a historic setting when the Pikunis people's freedom was eroded by the invasion of the white man into their territory. They try to adjust to keep the peace, but the white man's thinking differs from theirs and little by little they not only lose their land but also their way of life. The unlikely savior is a young man named White Man's Dog who earns the name Fools Crow when he kills the enemy chief. In this society bravery and honor are highly regarded and family and tribal heritage are important.
