With the exception of the Introduction, which is written from a more personal and subjective perspective and tone, the book as a whole is journalistic in tone. There is a sense, throughout the book, that the author is presenting the facts as they were recorded in history, specifically in the newspapers, correspondence, and records of the time he is writing about. In short, there is a sense, as a result of this tonal quality, that the narratives the author puts forth have been extensively and effectively researched.
