"Flush" by Virginia Woolf is ostensibly a light read and is written in a whimsical, tongue-in-cheek style. Layered within the whimsy, Woolf makes tribute to the special relationship between a human and a beloved animal. Digging even deeper, there are serious human issues that are addressed such as classism, independence, jealousy, misunderstanding, conflict and artificiality. However, the gentleness in which these profound subjects are approached takes the sting off their messages.
