Schutt's use of language is best described as economical. Florida is a short book even though it spans the life of a young woman. The chapters are all very brief and are written in poetic prose. The language is simple and uncomplicated. Schutt does not attempt to encumber her story with lengthy explanations or descriptions of what is happening to her characters, but rather, the reader is left to speculate about the missing details. This encourages the reader to actively contemplate what is written.
