Why does Simon Cooke think the police are questioning him at the bar?

When Anne mentions Blaze, Simon assumes that they are investigating her. He says he does not know what she is up to and that, although she had asked him to sabotage New Zealand’s Black Magic, he had no plans to follow through. He continues to tell the police what he knew of Blaze’s plans.
