To what is the wrecking of the French yacht compared in the novel, Floaters?

The French yacht is wrecked 53 years after the attack on Pearl Harbor, and therefore it is jokingly compared to Pearl Harbor. One of the cops says that this attack cannot be blamed on the Japanese as they are too busy and concerned with other regatta competitors.
