Julie had been bringing Bryce eggs for two years before she learned that he was taking then and throwing them away before his parents saw them. When she caught Bryce throwing them away, she asked why, and he told her his family were afraid that her eggs were bad because of the filty yard the chickens lived in. She was upset. She had been selling her eggs to other neighbors. She calculated that she probably lost over $100 by giving him the eggs all that time. She ran home in tears making Bryce felt like a real jerk.
Although things have come to a hurtful point in Juli's relationship with Bryce, positive progress has actually been achieved. What is positive about Juli's discovery that Bryce has been throwing all the eggs away is that Bryce is forced to be honest with her. After years of trying to ditch her and two years of throwing her eggs away, he finally confronts her with how he really feels. He is sorry but yet he is strong enough to tell her what was really going on. Despite her hurt, they will actually be able to begin a relationship built on honesty. She may be angry with him for a while, but in the end if their relationship has any chance at all, it has to be built on honesty or it will be doomed to fail. Bryce felt bad about his behavior and that his actions hurt Juli which indicates that he is maturing and gaining enough self-esteem to be honest. Of course, he was backed in the corner a bit but at least he didn't try to lie his way out of it.
