One of the vignettes in this section of the novel reveals the topic of the monologue of Annushka’s tormentor, turned mentor. In the vignette entitled “What the Shrouded Runaway Was Saying," it is revealed that the woman in rags had been speaking of ceaseless movement when Annushka had thought her to be cursing. She was actually saying, “Sway, go on, move” (258).
