It is in this last vignette “Boarding” that Tokarczuk features the symbol of the airline gangway. She and her fellow travelers, including the young man who writes, move into the tunnel in order to board the plane. The object symbolizes rebirth, as evidenced when an airline worker smiles at them like a promise “that perhaps we will be born anew now, this time in the right time and the right place"
