The unnamed narrator mentions a rumor she has heard. She says that these English speakers may soon adopt a dead language for their own private thoughts, one that has been dormant for centuries. This action would take place “so that for once they can have something just for themselves” (177). Secrecy and privacy are thus shown to be a crucial part of life.
