In the vignette entitled “Mapping the Void," the year is 1769 and James Cook is searching for a mysterious island. Each member of the Endeavor’s crew imagines their destination to look like their own native land: Tahiti, Yorkshire, Norway. When they finally reach New Zealand, they find beaches, fields, and mountains, just as they had imagined. The scene echoes the tendency for humans to view the world through the lens of their own previous experiences.
