In the vignette entitled “Mapping the Void," the year is 1769 and James Cook is searching for a mysterious island. Each member of the Endeavor’s crew imagines their destination to look like their own native land: Tahiti, Yorkshire, Norway. When they finally reach New Zealand, they find beaches, fields, and mountains, just as they had imagined.
