Trying to extricate himself from the difficult situation, Blau finally tells Mrs. Mole that he cannot get involved with her because he is "with someone" (161). Reflecting upon this, he realizes that the lie is actually not very far from the truth, for he feels that he has "been wedded, married, connected by blood" (162) to his love for anatomy throughout his life.
