The novel is mostly written in the present tense and utilizes a third-person omniscient narrator. The structure of the novel is mostly linear, although the first chapter takes place at the end of the narrative. After the first chapter, the novel then transitions to the beginning of the narrative and continues in a linear fashion until it reaches the chronological position just before the first chapter. The first chapter is also the only part of the novel that is written in the first person; it is written from Quickskill’s perspective. By beginning at the end of the narrative and giving Quickskill’s perspective, the narrative is framed from his perspective even when he is not present in a scene.
