Despite the fact that much of the novel concerns the very serious subject of slavery, Flight to Canada take a much more humorous and unconventional approach to the subject matter, and this approach is reflected in the language and presentation of the novel. This tone is established immediately through Quickskill’s poem, “Flight to Canada,” which taunts Arthur Swille and describes Quickskill’s journey as having been on a first-class seat in a jumbo jet: “Traveling in style / Beats craning your neck after / The North Star and hiding in / Bushes anytime” (3-4).
