Who is New Guy from Flight of the Intruder and what is their importance?

The "New Guy" is an unnamed pilot. Shortly after joining the squadron, he arranges a transfer to a desk job on the ship. Although, he is not shunned by the other pilots for this decision, he does lose their respect. The "new guy" represents those in the service who are unwilling to risk their lives in war, even as they watch their fellow soldiers do so.
