How does John Steinbeck use imagery in Flight?

Steinbeck uses animal imagery extensively is his character descriptions. Mrs. Torres compares her son to numerous animals including a coyote, a foolish chicken, and a lazy cow. Pepe is described as worming his way out, wriggling like a fish, darting, flashing, and crawling like a rattlesnake.
