Why don't the rulers of the 2D World want the people to know about higher dimensions? What do they do to suppress this information from the public?

In Flatland, the rulers of the 2D world want the people to remain ignorant of other dimensions because it threatens their ability to rule and have power over them. They have contrived a prophecy that every millenium one person will come to preach about the other dimensions and that one person will be imprisoned or executed. This is what happens to A. Square.
