For A. Square, life has changed, and not for the good. In the novel, Flatland, he realizes that there are other dimensions. However, the circles (priests in Flatland) consider such talk heretical and anyone caught speaking of a third dimension will be summarily imprisoned. A. Square learns that there is a third dimension when Sphere comes to him from the third dimension and proves to him that it exists. This is typical for those in flatland, they move through their lives in orderly fashion, reproducing and interacting in a calculated manner and at predictable rates. Chaos or too many variables are not allowed in this society. For example, The King of lineland has two wives. They produce using musical notes, at which time on wife will have two daughters and the other will have a son.
