Gordon's prose is marked by a stunning use of simile and metaphor. One example can be found in the way Margaret Casey's ugly coat fits her "like a cheese box."

A second example can be seen is the description of the zipper of Isabel's skirt when she has gained a gross amount, and the way the zipper left "the marks of small teeth, as if I had been pecked by a bird," on her flesh.
