Who is Narendra Modi from the book, Field Notes on Democracy?

Narendra Modi is India’s current Prime Minister and served as the Chief Minister of Gujarat from 2001 to 2014. Modi presided over the state of Gujarat when in 2002 around 2,000 Muslims were slaughtered in retaliation for the train burning at Godhra. Roy criticizes Modi for his complicity in a “carefully planned genocide against Muslims in the state” (12). She also criticizes Modi for nursing Hindu nationalism, especially in the form of nuclear power.
