Fever 1793

What does Mattie mean by saying the phrase “Nothing gained by delay” on p. 240 of fever 1973.

In context, Mattie is saying that it won't do her any good to wait... someone had to get up, and she would be the first. It is a new day.... and all is well. Her mother is alive, and Eliza, Robert, Silas, and William were safe and still fast asleep.
