On page 240 Mattie says “nothing gained by delay’’what does Mattie mean by that phrase?

In context, Mattie is saying that it won't do her any good to wait... someone had to get up, and she would be the first. It is a new day.... and all is well. Her mother is alive, and Eliza, Robert, Silas, and William were safe and still fast asleep.
