Violet is teaching Titus about the dead languages that her father teaches in college. To show examples, she pulls a pen and paper from her bag, which is something Titus rarely sees. He questions her about her possession of such objects, and it becomes clear that few in this modern world can read or write. Titus is one of them, although he admits he can only read a little. Again, the fact that Violet actively writes shows she is different, and better educated.
