Who is Sam Decker, and what was his relationship with Lillian Preston in the book, Feast Your Eyes?

Sam Decker was in the camera club with Lillian Preston in high school. She had a crush on him and wrote him letters when he deployed to Korea as a war photographer, but it is not clear that she meant anything to him. She called him “the bets photographer no one ever heard of” (9).
