Why has Bathsheba fired her bailiff in Chapter 10? Why is this a significant act?

Bathsheba has fired the bailiff, Pennyways, due to thieving. This is a significant act because Bathsheba tells her workers she is not hiring another bailiff and will be managing the farm herself. For a single woman to do so in this time was unthinkable.
