When Mr. Boldwood is walking home with Gabriel Oak after leaving Warren’s Malthouse, Mr. Boldwood takes the letter from his pocket and asks Gabriel if he knows whose handwriting it is. Gabriel says that the handwriting is that of Miss Everdene.
