What is Red Hair

For Maya, red hair represents her family's cohesion that excludes her. Red hair is the element that binds her parents and Lauren together, and one that visibly singles her out as the adopted one. She does not wish to have red hair, but she wishes that she could feel as if she belongs in her own family. Other people may point out that she looks so different, and this builds up in her to make her feel as if she truly does not belong in her own home.
