Dahl chooses to use a series of illustrations by Quentin Blake in order to demonstrate to the reader the timeline of the race between the mechanical shovels and the foxes. On the first page of Chapter 6, for example, the narrator states, "In the beginning, the hill looked like this:" (23) and on the following page, there is an illustration of the two tractors digging from the top of a large hill. The narrator then shares an illustration of the area an hour later, an illustration of the site at lunchtime, and an illustration of the site at five o'clock in the evening. By then, the hill has been transformed into a deep chasm.
