The final chapter, entitled Still Waiting, depicts the three farmers Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. They are sitting in the rain with their shotguns across their laps, waiting to shoot Mr. Fox at the first opportunity. Of course, the reader knows that Mr. Fox plans never to emerge from his hole again. The final sentence of the novel is therefore, "And so far as I know, they are still waiting" (80).
