What is the outcome of Bean's first plan to catch Mr. Fox?

The outcome of the plan in which the three farmers surround Mr. Fox's hole and wait for him to emerge so that they can shoot him is that Mr. Fox dives back into his hole. Unfortunately, his dive is a little too late and one of the farmers is able to shoot off Mr. Fox's tail.
