The narrator describes how the three farmers Boggis, Bunce, and Bean become "wild with rage" (8) at the thought that someone is robbing their farms at night. Rather than joining forces, however, each farmer holds a lonely vigil on his own farm armed with a shotgun and an intention to kill the thief.
