For what reason does Mr. Fox pause upon leaving Bean's cider cellar?

Mr. Fox knows that it is important that he cover his tracks when stealing from any of the three farmers Boggis, Bunce, and Bean. Therefore, he pauses outside of the cider cellar in order to "brick up the hole in the wall" (71), so as to hide evidence of his activities.
