How does the author use foreshadowing in Faith of My Fathers?

In Chapter Thirteen, McCain talks about meeting an Air Force major that had been a prisoner of war in Korea. The man talked about the difficulty of solitary confinement. McCain was in awe of his courage. McCain's memories of this experience foreshadow what will happen to him later on in the book.
