Who is Marshal Nevsky from Fail Safe and what is their importance?

Marshal Nevsky is a Soviet military leader. He liaises with General Bogan in trying to shoot down American bombers. When he fails to believe that one of the planes is a decoy, he sends his fighters after it, allowing two American bombers to slip through their defenses. Realizing his drastic mistake, Nevsky physically collapses.
