In 1947 Leclerc began his long association with the theater with the writing of Maluron, produced at Montreal's Théâtre du Gesù. In a note on the program he urged the creation of a truly Canadian theater that would reflect national preoccupations in a Canadian style. For him, theater is "le pain du peuple." "Servons le pays," he exhorts his fellow dramatists, and great art will be created in the process: "Les chefs d'oeuvre viendront par surcroît." In 1949 Leclerc helped found the VLM theater (Vien, Leclerc, Maufette) in Vaudureil.
