How does Thomas Schell Sr. speak after losing his voice?

After Thomas Schell loses his words, he begins to carry around blank notebooks, in which he writes words he would say to the person with whom he is interacting. If he runs out of pages in a book before the day is through he must use phrases he is already written to get across what he needs to say.
