Describe Oscar's interplay with Gerald Thompson in What The?

Oskar Schell meets Gerald Thompson while the latter is driving him and his mother to his father's funeral. He sits up front and tries to entertain Gerald, but had limited success, so he gives up and crawls back to sit with his mom, whom he thinks is beautiful and is his raison d'être.
