Mildred Lathbury is an unmarried woman in her thirties. She was raised in a country vicarage, her father was a clergyman, and her mother had died several years before. After her father's death, Mildred moved to London, but she continued to display many mannerisms and behaviors reminiscent of country life.
Mildred is described as having little confidence, and she is often put in the position of dealing with situations that are out of her comfort zone. In the end, she begins to carve out her own place in the world and realizes that excellent women can have it all.
