What led to Scott's drug addiction? To what was he addicted?

Scott incurred his addiction to opioids after suffering a slipped disc in his back that led to his taking Percocet. He then lost his doctor and prescriber and began stealing Fentanyl from his patients at nursing homes where he worked. He eventually turned to heroin.
