What is Diversity research project?

The diversity research project that Whitney assigns to Claude and Simone represents the belief of some white people that the experiences of all black people are the same, and that black people should be experts on black history just because they are black. Simone airs exactly this concern with Whitney, resisting the idea that she should be defined by her race. The fact that Claude knows so little about black history demonstrates the falseness of this assumption by Whitney and others; it is not the responsibility of black people to have a singular knowledge about black history and culture just because of their race.
