Janice’s gun symbolizes the option of violence that Claude possesses at the end of the novel, and with which he wrestles throughout its entirety. In the first riot, Claude debates whether to join Big Columbus and the Redbelters in engaging in violence against the police, and at the end of the novel, he has the option to defeat Big Columbus with violence by using the gun. His decision not to use violence constitutes his moment of self-actualization, and defines who he will be going forward.
