The media coverage of the riot represents America’s normalization of and willingness to ignore the violence that plagues black neighborhoods. Though the major news networks do initially cover the riot while the violence is ongoing, they quickly move on once other events occur, failing to acknowledge adequately the amount of death and destruction that occurred. The fact that the death of twenty-six people is so easily forgotten demonstrates how little the rest of America cares about what happens in black neighborhoods, which, as Grandma tells Claude, leads to them falling through the cracks.
