The novel is divided into numerous, unnumbered chapters, which are very short. Each chapter’s title contains either a description of a setting, the name of a character who is important in that chapter, or a central theme of the chapter. For example, the final chapter is titled “Where We Belong” to reflect the fact that Claude and Janice have finally achieved their goal: to find a place where they feel truly at home (261). Another chapter, which details Janice’s new relationship with Chester Dexter, is entitled “Chester Dexter and Renaissance” (101). These titles, which are simple and convey obvious plot points, mirror Bump’s simple writing style.
